The emergence of antibiotic resistance in microbial agents is of great
interest and concern for health care. Penicillin (PCN) was once the
mainstay of therapy for Streptococcus pneumoniae infections but
resistance to this agent is becoming more prominent. Different
therapeutic strategies need to be developed once the prevalence of PCN-
resistant S. pneumoniae reaches a critical threshold in a community. In
