A 'server'-type option is an option in the Option File that can
1. Run routine, and 2. Action options. In the first case, the
server can be allowed to run the routine whose name is found
in the 'Routine' field of that option. In the second case,
when no routine is entered in that field, the menu system will
execute the MUMPS code found in the Action and Exit Action
fields of the Option File for that server option.
Typically, an application programmer will write a program
and create a server type option to run that program which will
be shipped with an application package. The local IRM staff,
should they wish to put a server 'on-line' will fill in the
receive Mailman messages that can trigger background jobs. Each
necessary fields in the Option file for that server. If a
server is on-line a mail message arriving at the site addressed
to S.(option name) will cause the server to do whatever is
specified invarious [fields of the Option File]. Option File.
server option can be individually tailored and monitored by the
local IRM staff to insure security and efficiency. There are
several fields in the Option File which help accomplish these
local goals. No background jobs will be started by the menu
system unless the local Option File has been specifically set
up to allow a specific server to do so.
